Fraction Wall — see how fractions line up

Ten bars of the same whole, cut ten different ways. Paint the pieces and watch equivalent fractions line up on their own.

Fractions confuse many learners because the same amount can wear many names: one half, two quarters and three sixths are identical, yet they look nothing alike on paper. A fraction wall fixes that by drawing them. Ten bars, each exactly one whole long, are cut into halves, thirds, quarters and so on down to twelfths. When pieces from different rows end at the same point, the amounts are the same.

Every row below is one whole bar, cut into a different number of equal pieces. Click pieces to paint them.
Painted so far: 0 of one whole bar.
Try this: paint the 1/2 piece. Then, in the 1/4 row, paint pieces until you reach exactly the same spot. How many quarters did it take?

The magic of the fraction wall: fractions that end at exactly the same place are worth the same amount — 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 5/10. They are called equivalent fractions, and this wall lets you spot them with your eyes instead of memorizing rules.

How to play

Click pieces to paint them and watch the running total at the top, measured against one whole bar. Try painting the half piece, then paint quarters until you reach exactly the same spot — the wall cheers when equivalent fractions meet.

What you learn

You see equivalent fractions instead of being told about them, and the wall makes common denominators feel obvious: to compare or add fractions, first re-cut them into matching pieces. That single picture answers most early fraction questions.
