Why Are Wheels Round? — roll both and compare the ride

A square wheel can roll. The real question is what happens to the axle — and to anyone sitting on top of it.

Everyone knows wheels are round, but few can say precisely why a square wheel fails. This toy puts a round wheel and a square wheel side by side on the same road and rolls them together. Each wheel carries a platform at its axle, and each axle draws a trail as it travels. The two trails tell the whole story: one is a perfectly straight line, the other is a row of identical bumps.

Same size, same little platform on the axle. Very different ride.
Round wheel Square wheel

Press Play and watch the two trails left by the axles: blue for the round wheel, orange for the square one. Which platform would you rather ride on?

Nothing here is faked: the square wheel really tips from corner to corner, and its axle height is computed from the true geometry of the tipping square on every single frame.

How to play

Press Play and watch both wheels roll. Follow the blue trail of the round wheel and the orange trail of the square wheel, then imagine standing on each platform. Which ride would your stomach prefer?

What you learn

A circle has the same radius in every direction, so its centre glides along at a constant height. A square has no such mercy: its centre rises and falls as it tips from side to corner. Smooth transport is really about a steady axle — roundness is just the shape that guarantees it.
